Forbiden entry into Algeria for the Moroccan Berbers

Upon arrival at Algiers airport Wednesday the 29 of October 2008, thirty-five members of a delegation of representatives from moroccan Berbers associations, among them Rashid RAHA and Me Adgherni (President of the Democratic Party Amazigh of Morocco). They were arrested by Algerian security while they attend to participate to the World Amazigh Congress which should be held simultaneously in Meknes and Tizi-Ouzou from October 30 to November 2.

Official request for an autonomy status for Kabylia

7 years after having formulated its first claim, MAK (Movement for autonomy of Kabylia) has formally officialised its request for a regional autonomy to state authorities; a copy was addressed to international authorities and to Nelson Mandela. Adekar was choosen by the autonomist movement to send the registered mail, this locality is located at 1000 meter above the sea , mid-way between Vgayet and Tizi-Ouzou and close to Amirouche’s headquarters at Akfou.

On Tuesday October 7, 2008, a human rights defender reported that six people in Algeria have been accused of non-respect of Muslims Ramadan fasting, and have been sentenced to four years in prison each by the court of Biskra (420 Km south of Algiers).

Afer was born in 185 BC. , Taken away from his village by Roman legionary in the region of Hippo (now Annaba in the eastern Algeria), "Afer" means in Berber: the inhabitant of Africa (Roman province of eastern North Africa (Tamazgha in Berber) which includes the present Tunisia and Libya).

Couscous: about the etymology of the word

The Berber origin of the word couscous does not make any doubt, even if its exact formation has some darknesses. Indeed, the term, in the base form seksu (and various local phonetic alternatives) is attested in almost all the Berber Algéro-Morrocans dialects: kabyle, Chleuh, Riffian… (Cf Dallet 1982, p. 709, Destaing 1938, or Laoust 1920, p. 78, which gives a statement of attested forms).

Petition for Kabylia autonomy

This petition has been initiated by the Kabylia Movement for Autonomy (MAK). According to the MAK, the petition will be presented to the Algerian presidency and to the United Nations, and a referendum on the autonomy of Kabylia will be organized under the supervision of the United Nations.
